Life can bring about imbalance. Even the most healthy of folks may find their body out of balance from time to time. It could be from added stressors, a change in diet, or a couple of bad sleeps. These things could cause the imbalance, or the imbalance could be the source of the issues that pop up.

Below we address how the balance of the organs fits within acupuncture and herbal medicine.

Where does balancing organs fit within acupuncture?

Balancing organs is a fundamental part of acupuncture. Acupuncture itself is built on the concept of balance. Balance is the principle behind treating illnesses and maintaining a healthy body. If your body were to become imbalanced, you would experience illness and health complications. Balancing organs and the body is the basis for all acupuncture.

Why is it important to balance your organs?

If your organs and body become imbalanced, you are likely to experience complications with your health. Think about it this way: if you were to get on a seesaw with someone who is the same weight as you, the seesaw will be balanced and stable. However, if you were to get on a seesaw with someone who is significantly heavier than you are, that person will sink to the ground, while you would wind up sitting in the air on the high end of the seesaw. This will leave you feeling anxious and worried, knowing you may fall any time.

The same idea could be applied to our body. Our body is made up of 12 organ systems. These systems face each other, are interrelated, and achieve symmetry. For example, the lung and the bladder are partners in this system. If balance is lost and you experience complications in your lung, you may also experience complications in your bladder. For example: when older women experience lung complications and start coughing, they may notice urine leakage due to related bladder complications.

What are some ways that Herbal Medicine can help balance your organs?

Herbal medicine can definitely help with this as well. After identifying which organs are experiencing complications, you would take the herbal medicine that is going to specifically help those organs. For example, you would take herbal medicine that is good for the lungs if you are experiencing complications in your lungs.

Herbs that Dr. Ko might prescribe?

The herbs that Dr. Ko would prescribe would differ based on which part of the body and which organs you need help with. For example, if he were to treat your lungs, he would prescribe: Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis, Radix), Jie Geng (Platycodi, Radix), and Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae, Radix).
